Waste isn't waste to anyone who appreciates the resourcefulness of nature. By observing natural ecosystems we can see that waste from one process is an ideal resource for another. Tierra Lucero is launching a pilot project to reclaim waste vegetable oil (WVO) and transform it into bio-fuel that will power vehicles throughout Northern New Mexico. Securing a way to keep our region's goods and services flowing will help shield Northern New Mexico's economy from the vagaries of the uncertain energy future our world faces. With peak oil upon us and the race to claim the last remnants of nonrenewable energy, now is the time to take our energy future into our own hands. We can procure much of our energy locally, achieving greater transparency in the process and a more equitable distribution of energy resources.
